the low quality of the film and audio makes it seem like its a fan made found footage video of a Japanese Reporter Passing Out (i couldnt see the arm or hear the bang at first), not really scary to me, atleast this station stopped the live immediately unlike with Budd Dwyer, R.I.P Chubbuck. Subject: Ordinary routine TV tape from the third camera
Real tape. But the most “humane” version, adapted for mass viewing. Maximum blurred and glitched, color removed.
Since the late 60s, all programs on American TV, even regional, is filming in parallel with at least three cams located in three places in the studio. The maximum number of cams in large TV companies is visible, for example, in the movie "Tootsie". Where inside the studio you can see at least 15-20 televisions with views from cams placed on different angles.
And how it works. First camera provides a close-up view. Usually for reading the news. This is what the audience saw live on that damn day. Second camera provides a medium shot. For meetings and interviews with one guest. Third camera is located farthest and provides the most distant shot. When there is more than one guest in the studio. What we see is the "third camera" version. No changing angles, no switching from cam to cam.
An ordinary routine TV tape. You don't have to work there to know this. It's enough to at least read about the history of TV. Or watch any movie or TV series about working of television companies. RIP Christine Chubbuck

NationSquid (The original uploader of this footage) has a reputation for just making things up in his countdown videos. The video is strangely overprocessed, being in black and white with enough film grain to count, and the sound is strangely not processed enough. It's inconsistent with official reports, inconsistent with itself, it's inconsistent all around. This video is not real.

Subject: Fake or not? Still confusing.
Those arguments of the "famous real audio" born from nowhere in... 2021 ? full of glitches and reverb like. Just listen to those Ai covers (Freddie Mercury singing Welcome to the Jungle e.g). Real because fitting the newspapers records ? Well, the footage here is just as audible as hell. This is shitting of a clue. The notes from Christine left on the desk? Hmm, no proof she said exactly what she wrote at the time. Clearly I'm not convinced at all. Still wondering if this footage could have been shot by a control camera placed on the left of the main one, (with a higher perspective, explaining why the H of the desk - maybe a little curved - is larger than it looked filmed in front). Distortion of sound can be done at every stage of the digitalisation so... The only proof I'd go with, will be compare it with the sealed one. with my own eyes.

I mean besides the fact that the script is off Christine Chubbuck died in 1974. Color TV where widely available by the 1960 and common place in but the start of the 70's. This video is a hoax/reenactment.

Subject: Fake
This is NOT the real footage. This is a recreation. This script was from "Kate Plays Christine" when she read the newspaper on what Christine said. According to confirmed audio leaks, she actually says;
"In keeping with the WXLT practices presenting the most immediate and complete reports of local blood and guts news, TV-40 presents what is believed to be a television first. In living color, an exclusive coverage of an attempted suicide,"
not
"In keeping with Channel 40's policy in bringing you the latest in blood and guts and in living color you're going to see another first. An attempted suicide."
You can also see environmental differences. The "H" in "Newswatch" is wider than the real one, seen in pictures taken of the event. Also, the footage wouldn't show the desk at all. The recording of her only showed to top of the desk and her head, this angle is too wide.
One final thing to keep in mind is that the footage is protected by a law firm, and also Christine's brother, Greg.

Subject: this footage is fake!
On January 31st, 2017, a video titled "Freaky 5 - Lost Footage" was uploaded by a YouTuber called NationSquid, featuring five pieces of lost media that are considered creepy or disturbing. The Christine Chubbuck story is at number 1 on the list.
At the end of the video, at 8 minutes and 46 seconds, there appears to be footage of the suicide as it happened. It is in black and white, with distorted audio and video. Since then, many users on YouTube have since re-uploaded the so-called "footage".
There was a wide debate on websites like 4Chan, the NationSquid Forums and even the Lost Media Wiki forums about the authenticity of the so-called "footage" from NationSquid. NationSquid himself never replied to any questions about whether the footage was real or fake, and therefor users on the aforementioned websites came up with theories and analyses in attempts to deliver a verdict on whether the footage was genuine or fabricated.
On February 13th, 2017, the footage seen in NationSquid's video was confirmed fake by Gordon Galbraith, who was the news director of Newswatch program at WXLT-TV (now WWSB-TV) that Christine hosted at the time of her suicide.

1. The voice has a digital wobble added to it.
2. The voice is digitally distorted, but the other effects, like the body falling aren't and have too good of a quality.
3. The voice isn't centered because of all the fake distortion and wobble added, even though sound effects at the completely same time are. They forgot to add the effects to anything else besides the voice.
Nice try.

This video is the real deal. It not from the movie, because the set in movie was different. The set on this video matches exactly to the set in actual photos taken from that day. Would be very difficult to recreate this set for a fake video. Unfortunately it not the best quality and is in black and white which was still widely used in 1974.

https://youtu.be/8koG85nMYTk
https://youtu.be/1kBvhIYx0PU
So, the video presented in this archive is a garbled version of the scene from the film about Christine Chubbuck. It isn't the actual video of her suicide. The actual videos are locked away and not obtainable. You can't see them.
Furthermore, in analysis of the film scene, it's not at all what witnesses stated occurred. She made her final statement, pulled out the .38 S&W, shot herself just behind her right ear, slumped back in her chair and then fell to the floor. That would be consistent with a body's reaction to sudden, instant death. It just collapses downward, not forward or backward. All of the muscles have gone completely limp so there's nothing to keep anything upright at all. If you search for the video of R. Budd Dwyer committing suicide on live television, that may yet be available and one can see how bodies fall when dead.
The film scene is dramatic and though it depicts a real life event, it isn't real and real death by gunshot wound looks completely different.

Subject: Lies change, Shills stay the same
Amusing to track the history of the 'arguments' and 'evidence' that people have been presenting to discredit the authenticity of this video since its emergence online. As you can see from the bottom of the review chain, the initial argument against the authenticity of this video was that someone who worked for the same network as Chubbuck in 1974 claimed that 1) there was only one camera being used in the studio and 2) the zoom and framing of the shot in this video doesn't match the one used for live broadcasts. Firstly, the only proof for either of those claims is "just trust me bro". Secondly, the notion that a television studio which broadcasts live news would have a single stationary camera which NEVER change its framing, focus, or POV is ludicrous on its face.
Now apparently there is an "authentic" audio recording of the event which differs from the audio of this video, confirming that its fraudulent. Supposedly the only authentic copy of Chubbuck's suicide is in the possession of a lawyer representing her family and the news station. If that's the case, where did this new audio come from? If not them, why does anyone deem it more 'authentic' than this?

Subject: Not Sure If It's The Original?
Found a YouTube video outlining this, and according to my research into the matter, this dosnt seem like the original? The audio (might just be from the uploads, so I'll give it that) is rather static-y, and the video seems to be remade. Now, that being said however, the overall setting DOES seem to be on point with the original incident, so honestly I'm not too sure where I stand on ths matter. Regardless, even if it is fake, it's very well done, and if it's actually the original, thanks for uploading because from what I've read there was only one or two tapes that were ever released, and it would be crazy difficult to find

Folks, this informative video should help satiate your curiosity:
Apparently, there is the original tape and one copy. Her family has the copy and the station retained the original which is now in the hands of, as I understand it, an attorney.
The Chubbuck tape has been sought like mad for decades. The only other tape that people are so fascinated with of this "genre" would be the audio tape of Timothy Treadwell that was accidentally recorded as he was screaming in agony and horror while being eaten alive by a brown bear. The only two people to have heard the audio tape is the great filmaker and documentation, Werner Herzog, and the woman that Treadwell left his estate to. The tape is in her possession and it is stored in a bank safe deposit box. The whole story: https://youtu.be/VBGFONxNpVQ

Subject: It actually happened folks. Unfortunately it is not a fake suicide
That anyone would post such a statement about the young woman's last moments being some hoax or faked suicide is beyond disrespectful and just plain arrogant. This case is a publicly reported and law enforcement investigated suicide. The comment below mine has to be written by someone with no knowledge whatsoever about criminal justice, the legal system, law enforcement obligations, and not even the slightest amount of knowledge about medicolegal death investigations. In other words, that comment comes from genuine ignorance. I happen to be a former major crimes detective, homicide investigator, and deputy medical examiner. This case happened and there is at least one copy of the clip that has none of the flaws this VHS tape has.
I could spend the rest of the day writing about death investigation, crime scene analysis, evidence collection, death scene processing, photography and report writing along with every single remaining aspect of investigating suicides, homicides, and accidental deaths, but it wouldn't be worth the effort to try and convince a single individual who has formed a (baseless) conclusion that they're going to pretend is the only reasonable outcome despite the case facts that anyone can purchase using a FOIA request submitted to the investigating law enforcement agency. There is also no point in debating the fact the clip is in poor condition, because if anything is beyond persuasive argumentation it is the terrible quality of the tape. In any case there is no legitimate purpose in publicly declaring "faked suicide" the premature death of anyone suffering from personal issues leading to drastic and permanent decisions. They do have surviving family members and other loved ones who have been deeply traumatized by the suicide. I have investigated many such cases, and many other deaths that weren't suicides. Yet, none of them prepared me for the suicide of my own son two years ago.
He had his own reasons for murdering himself, but what those reasons were he shared with absolutely no one. Not a note left anywhere, and the permanent mental imagery of him on the floor of the same bedroom I slept in as a boy. When you hear people say their child's death hit them like a baseball bat to the gut I can say without any hesitation it is like that and so much more.

Subject: A point I have yet to see made yet:
The comment below that brings up how people can usually tell the difference between authentic and a rushed job, and the incorrect VHS distortion of this clip imply it’s a hoax. I noticed something wrong with the distortion, myself, except it’s about the audio not the video: her voice is so distorted you can hardly tell what she’s saying at all, so you’d think that’s the tape itself having some kind of problem, but if it was the tape being super old why does the sound of her head hitting the wood of the desk sound almost crystal clear as if it’s dubbed over the rest of it? Her voice sounded processed like crazy, but that “thump” sound didn’t get all garbled. So either the audio being obviously faked ruins this clips claim for being real, or else the incredibly unlikely chance that when Christine’s voice was broadcast live her mic sounded THAT unintelligible anyways, (yet the station never mentioned this happening) while some second mic without any problems picked up the sound of her head hitting the desk, and this footage is simply because both audio feeds were mixed together live. There’s pretty much no chance it happened that way. If you close your eyes and listen it sounds like someone talking into a distorted voice fx box and dropping a heavy book on a desk. If the sound was that bad because of the tape being old and damaged that knock would be equally as glitchy. I rest my case.
I don’t care if you say you don’t believe me unless you can explain why, and hopefully after reading this no one passes this clip around still saying it’s real, Don’t be that guy.
And just for the effort of whoever made it, I’d still say it’s a 4 out of 5 even though it’s faked.

Subject: Confirmed NOT authentic
After noticing the dialog in the comments section of this one going back and forth on both sides, here's the take of someone truly neutral:
Actually, this is not a take.. it's just a fact: it's not real. There is confirmed audio of the event that has been verified, and the video shown here matches almost none of what was in the authentic audio of the event.
Furthermore, you can tell the vhs layer is an alpha layer / video edit, and not true scan lines from authentic old vhs footage. You can tell the difference between rushed imitations of old things, and verifiably old footage.
So I'm very sorry to those who thought this was real. But, its not. That's a fact.

The arguments about this being fake are, so far, really quite tenuous.
One guy from the original station claims it's fake. What about other staff that witnessed the event that day? Why have none come forward?
The people who would definitely know whether or not this is fake would be: (a) those working at the TV station on that day, (b) viewers who witnessed the event live on TV (many would still retain a good memory of it), (c) surviving family members of C. Chubbuck - they would have had access to the original tape.
Until these people come forward to say something...the evidence that the footage is fake remains insufficient.

Though eerie and otherworldly, I would suggest that this seems obviously faked due to the total lack of reaction in the environment around her.
Although studio staff would be conditioned to remain totally silent during broadcast, it stretches credulity to imagine that not one single person in the studio would have screamed, groaned, shouted "stop" "don't" etc when she pulled out a firearm, and especially after she fired it at her head.
Bud Dwyer's suicide gives a realistic reaction to someone pulling out a firearm suddenly in a room full of people, and then using it to horrifying effect. No one can ever know in that moment if the person wielding the weapon is going to try to kill persons in the immediate area.
If by chance it actually happened in total silence as depicted here, it would seem that that in itself would be noteworthy in the record of the events after the fact.
